At Goodheart Animal Sanctuaries, every rescue is special, but Brucey the goose’s story stands out as a true example of resilience and renewal. His journey from a lonely, abandoned goose to a cherished member of our flock highlights the incredible impact that care and compassion can have on an animal’s life.
In 2022, we received an urgent call from a concerned lady who told us about a goose who had been abandoned on a small lake near her home. He was living in isolation after the disappearance of his mate just before Christmas. Geese, like many animals, are social creatures, and Brucey was clearly heartbroken and lonely without his companion.
But Brucey’s situation was even more dire than it first appeared. The mere where he had been left was known for dangerous blue-green algae blooms, which are highly toxic to both humans and animals.
The lady suspected that Brucey’s mate and several other birds had succumbed to the algae, leaving him the sole survivor. She was desperate to save him and give him a chance to live out his twilight years in safety and comfort.
Fortunately, we had room within our sanctuary flock to give Brucey the safe home he so desperately needed. In the summer of 2022, we welcomed Brucey to our sanctuary, where he would never have to feel alone again.
As with all new arrivals, Brucey was placed in quarantine for a short period so our team could assess his health and provide any necessary treatments. Thankfully, Brucey was in good condition despite his ordeal, but his sadness was clear. Domestic geese, while not always mating for life, are incredibly loyal to their partners and often mourn their loss. It was evident that Brucey was grieving the loss of his mate.
Once his quarantine period was over, it was time for Brucey to meet his new friends. Introducing a new animal into an established group is always a delicate process, and this is especially true for geese, who are known to form very close-knit social groups. Thankfully, our resident flock welcomed Brucey with open wings.
It wasn’t long before Brucey was being shown around the yard and sanctuary pool, with his new friends introducing him to the best napping and grazing spots. It was heartwarming to see how quickly Brucey settled in, finding comfort in the company of his fellow geese. What began as a shy and sombre arrival soon blossomed into a story of resilience and renewal.
Two years on, Brucey is a completely transformed goose. Once timid and reserved, he has become something of a leader within the flock, often seen confidently leading the gaggle on their daily adventures around the sanctuary. It’s incredible to witness the change in him – from a lonely, lost soul to a proud and happy goose who truly belongs.
Brucey’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of providing animals with the care and companionship they deserve. Geese are intelligent, social creatures, and like all animals, they need more than just food and shelter – they need a sense of belonging and safety. Thanks to the kindness of a concerned member of the public and the support of our sanctuary team, Brucey now enjoys his days surrounded by friends in a place where he is loved and cared for.
